Free tools that cover most of what people pay monthly subscriptions for. Every entry includes the catch, because every free tool has one. Prices change constantly, so always check the current pricing page before deciding anything.
Writing, research and thinking
Free option: the free tiers of Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini. Replaces: most standalone paid writing assistants, which are often wrappers around these same models.
The catch: free tiers have usage caps and can queue during peak hours. If AI drafts your income-producing work daily, one paid model subscription is the single upgrade worth making before anything else.
Screen recording and video editing
Free option: OBS Studio for recording, CapCut or DaVinci Resolve for editing. Replaces: paid screen recorders and subscription editors.
The catch: OBS has a learning curve of about an hour. CapCut's free tier watermarks some template effects, so build your own captions instead of using templated ones. Check export and commercial terms for your use case.
Design and thumbnails
Free option: Canva free tier, or generate layouts with an AI model and refine manually. Replaces: paid design subscriptions for basic social assets.
The catch: premium templates and brand kit features sit behind Canva Pro. For one consistent template reused daily, free is enough.
Automation
Free option: Make and Zapier free tiers, or n8n self-hosted if you are slightly technical. Replaces: paid automation plans, for low volumes.
The catch: free tiers cap operations per month hard. Fine for testing a workflow, tight for running one. n8n removes the cap but you host it yourself.
Notes, database and planning
Free option: Notion free plan or Obsidian. Replaces: paid project tools for a solo operator.
The catch: Notion free is per-person generous but AI features are metered. Obsidian is fully free and local, which is also the privacy-friendly option.
The honest summary
A solo creator or builder can genuinely run on $0 to start. I do most of my testing on free tiers first.
The first subscription actually worth paying for is one strong AI model plan, because it multiplies everything else.
Pay for a tool only when you hit its free cap twice in one month. Hitting the cap means the tool is earning its keep.
